League Report

Hidden Open
SUPER SUNDAY
The anticipation of another close finish to the league on Super Sunday was expected as four teams- Hopeman, Elgin, Moray and Nairn Dunbar all had a chance of winning or even potentially finishing in a four way tie!

However, Nairn Dunbar who needed a big win over Nairn quickly dropped out of the running by losing their opening two games before finally going down 6-2, which meant Nairn overtook them to finish on 6 points and in third place.

Moray, needing to take both points and hope for an Elgin win, also found it hard going against the host club, Forres who went on to beat Moray for the first time since the Super Sunday format was introduced in 2006.

That left the winners to come from Hopeman and Elgin. With two games left on the course Elgin led 4-2 and at that point if one game went to each club then there would have been a tie for the League as both clubs would have the same points total as well as individual games won.

Hopeman took control when Kevin McLaughlin, their team captain won his game over Hamish Simpson 3/2. David Ettles therefore needed a half point against Elgin number one, Darren McKenzie for the title. He duly delivered by stepping onto the 18th tee dormie one up, although Darren finished off in style by holing a 30 foot put to win the 18th and halve their match, as well as secure an Elgin victory.

Hopeman , Elgin and Nairn were all on six points but on a countback, Hopeman had over the season won one more individual point than Elgin to give them their first trophy success since 2007.

There were some interesting spectators who joined the players watching the games that finished on the last green. Click HERE to find out their identity!!!

AUGUST

See SUPER SUNDAY for a report how the league was won and lost.

Hopeman moved into pole position with a resounding victory over Nairn, who have had a good record at Hopeman in the past. It sets up an interesting match with Elgin on Super Sunday with one of the permutations depending on other results being a tied league if Elgin win 5-3!

However, no doubt Moray and Forres will still not feel out of it as they meet in one of the other two fixtures. Nairn are now mathematically out of contention as even with a whitewash win against Nairn Dunbar, at least one other club will finish higher than them. Nairn Dunbar, unless they can take the points at Forres this weekend, will join their local rivals in a match with local pride only at stake.

Nairn Dunbar ended Forres hopes of lifting the title this coming weekend on Super Sunday with a close 5-3 victory over their hosts, only the second away win for any team this season. They can still win the trophy but because of an inferior games won total will require a big win over Nairn plus other results to go in their favour.

JULY
The month started with a home win, this time for Nairn against Forres but the visitors pushed them all the way with four games going to the last green including the final game when Steven Sharp beat Andrew McCulloch to secure the points for the hosts.

Nairn Dunbar secured their first points with a convincing win over Moray which leaves all the teams bar Nairn at the top separated only by games won. Hopeman, although at the foot of the table, are in the strongest position being the only club to win away so far, which they will hope to make full advantage of as they play their next two games at home.

Home advantage was made to count by both Elgin , who avenged a heavy defeat last season at Nairn Dunbar, and Hopeman who were taken all the way by Moray before edging through.

With Hopeman, Moray and Forres having home advantage in the three remaining fixtures before Super Sunday the Legaue yet again is heading for a close finish next month.

JUNE
Moray were almost perfect against Nairn in their home opener with Nairn’s only point coming in the last game on the course when Jacob Christensen won on the final green. The month continued with two further home wins for both Forres and Nairn against Hopeman and Elgin respectively. Five teams separated only by games won suggests the league heading for another tight finish although Hopeman having played both their away matches and Moray with their big home win, possibly have a slight edge at this stage over the others.
MAY
Elgin, after their dramatic win on Super Sunday at Hopeman last August, will be looking to successfully defend their title when this year’s competition gets underway in May. A repeat outright success is something that has eluded every club since Nairn Dunbar accomplished the feat back in 2001. However, they took the first step towards it with a convincing win at home over Forres.

Hopeman went to Nairn Dunbar and returned with two valuable away points to get their campaign off to the best possible start.
