League Report

Hidden Open
SUPER SUNDAY

The expectations of a close finish to the league on Super Sunday at Hopeman were unbelievably surpassed when with only three games left on the course, four clubs were still able to win the trophy. Additionally, one combination of results could even have resulted in the title being shared by Nairn and Forres!

Nairn set the mark when James Walton defeated George Anderson of Nairn Dunbar to secure a 5-3 victory for his team and take them to six points.

Moray and Forres were level at 3 ½ – 3 ½  before Michael Cowie beat Forres number one, Allan Martin to end Forres hopes but unfortunately  for the holders it still was not enough as on a count back of games won,  Nairn had a better total.

Therefore, all that stood between Nairn and a first success since 1997 was the last match on the course when anything other than an Elgin win would give them the title. Elgin had looked out of the running as they trailed 3½-1½  before wins by Hamish Simpson and Raymond Spence brought them level with the host club, Hopeman. With everyone gathered in front of the clubhouse for the arrival of the last pair, it was Elgin who were able to celebrate when news came through that Darren McKenzie had won 2/1 over Andy Stewart to claim victory for his side by the narrowest of margins.

Elgin had taken the title by virtue of more individual games won compared to both Nairn and Moray as all had finished on six points.

A great day’s and season’s golf was rounded off with a dinner and prize giving when it was clear the friendship on and off the course was the League’s greatest strength.

During the evening in a light hearted quiz, it emerged that Wayne Myron (Elgin) held the record for most appearances by any member since the inception of the Handicap League in 1996 with 42 appearances for his Club, whilst a member of the most recent addition to the League, Hopeman had the player with the most consecutive appearances (21) between 6th June 2004 and 1st June 2008 through Malcolm Brown. These and other statistics are now on the Statistics Page under Member Club and Individual Player.

Rounding off the day League Chairman, James Macpherson, presented Hopeman President, Sandy More with a framed certificate on behalf of the League in recognition of their achieving their Centenary this year.

AUGUST
Nairn after a convincing home win over Moray rekindled their title ambitions. However the final scoreline does not reflect the closeness of the match with every game going to at least the 16th green and three of them down the last.

Nairn Dunbar stopped Forres winning the trophy before Super Sunday as well as boosting their own title aspirations when they scored an emphatic victory at home which moved them up to second place in the table.

Forres are still marginal favourites with a one point advantage over their rivals, but should they falter then any one of four teams could win the title. So two weeks time at Hopeman may well have the secretary reaching for his calculator again!

JULY
Elgin took over at the top for the first time this season after a comprehensive home win over Nairn. However, Forres are the only team with an away point so, if they can capitalise when they play at home over the next two weekends, they will quickly move up from the bottom to top of the table!

Forres recorded a convincing victory at home over Nairn and moved up to second place in the table. This Sunday’s meeting of the two at Forres may well decide who goes into Super Sunday as favourite to win the title. Nairn’s second heavy defeat of the season after their opening win, means they will require a number of matches to go in their favour if they are to have any chance of winning the trophy.

Forres recorded a second successive win to take over from leaders Elgin at the top. The match was exceptionally close with 7 of the 8 games going to at least the 17th green. If they can take something from their match at Nairn Dunbar next month then they will be strong favourites to lift the trophy for only the second time at Super Sunday.

Hopeman kick started their challenge with a convincing victory over Nairn Dunbar at home, so all teams have now got at least one win to their credit with every club still mathematically in contention.

Moray continued the trend of home victories when they beat Hopeman at Lossiemouth. For Hopeman, defeat spelt the end of their bid to win back the trophy in the Club’s centenary year as either Moray or Forres, who meet on Super Sunday will reach at least 6 points, one more than the best Hopeman can do. However, if the pattern continues of hoem wins when Moray and Forres visit Nairn and Nairn Dunbar respectively early next month, then any number of options will still be possible come Super Sunday in August.

JUNE
Moray took their first points in the defence of their title with a close win over Nairn Dunbar who were hoping to build on their excellent start in their opening match. Four games went to the final green but it was the home side who came out on top by the narrowest of margins.

Hopeman entertained Forres and had an equally close match with six of the games going to at least the 17th green. At the end of the day the points were shared which means Forres are the first club to secure a valuable away point this season. It may yet prove crucial when along with the other clubs they return to Hopeman for Super Sunday on 23rd August.

MAY
Moray G.C. will seek to retain the trophy they won for the first time at Nairn last year whilst Hopeman will be trying to regain the title they had held or shared in 2006 and 2007. However, it will not be easy given the competitive nature of the League.

In the opening match Elgin defeated the holders 6-2 at Hardhillock which was much closer than the final score line, as 4 games went to the final green and three of the others were not decided until the 17th hole. Elgin then travelled to Nairn Dunbar where they found their hosts in top form whilst Hopeman were across the town the same afternoon playing Nairn. The match was much closer before again resulting in a home victory by the narrowest of margins.
