League Report

The 60th year of the Scratch League produced yet another exciting conclusion to a weekend’s golf when Nairn became the first club since Moray in 1990 to successfully defend the G.R. Thomson Shield.

Moray provided the opposition in the final match with the Lossiemouth club slight favourites at the start as they could afford a draw to win the Shield whereas nothing less than outright victory would give Nairn the title. The home club looked well set when they won three of the first four games to finish. Kevin Thomson then scored a point for Moray to narrow the gap. The final three matches had each only 1 hole in them with six left to play.

Fraser Fotheringham secured a fourth point for Nairn but Robbie Sheils was 1 up on the 18th against Alec Scott whilst in the top match Bruce Thomson led his namesake Gary Thomson from Moray by 1 hole with two to play. With all the players from both teams watching, Bruce rolled in a 3 foot putt down the hill for a par on the 17th to half the hole and secure that vital extra half point for Nairn, allowing them to take the Shield for a16th time in the history of the event. Alec Scott added a half to the total with a birdie 4 on the 18th to share the spoils with Robbie whilst Gary deservedly also birdied the final hole to half his game with Bruce.

Nairn Dunbar pushed both the top two teams all the way, drawing with Nairn whilst losing narrowly to Moray to finish a highly creditable third overall.
