NAIRN TAKE TITLE ON THE FINAL GREEN
Nairn took the G. R. Thomson Shield for the first time in six years in as dramatic a finish to rival their last success. Needing Moray to beat Forres to give them a chance, the team from Lossiemouth duly delivered when they won 5-3.
However, despite that defeat, Forres were still favourites as Nairn required to win at least 6-2 against Nairn Dunbar to take the title on a countback. A 5½- 2½ win would leave them level on points and games won but as Forres had beaten Nairn in the head-to-head they would be champions.
The early games went Nairn’s way and were quickly leading 4-1. The last three games featuring the top of the order from each club were all close. Neil Hampton increased the margin to 5-1 by winning 2/1, with team captain, Robert Smith all square on the 18th against Ian Duncan. Ian’s birdie attempt just stayed out leaving Robert a 20 foot putt for victory.To cheers from his teammates,i t disappeared in the centre of the cup to secure the vital sixth point for Nairn. The final game also went to the last green and this time it was Nairn Dunbar who won with a birdie from William Barron (jnr) as he hit his approach stone dead.
Nairn therefore by the narrowest of margins won the League for the 15th time in the 59 year history of the League.
