League Summary
The Moray & Nairn Handicap League celebrated its 10th year with its first Super Sunday at Elgin Golf Club and the outcome could not have been closer as the title was shared for the first time.
The day started with Elgin in control over their own destiny as victory against Hopeman would end any chance they or Forres had to win the League. However, Hopeman improved their own title aspirations by taking four out of the first five games to finish.
At this stage Forres now assumed the mantle of favourites, assuming they could beat Moray. Tied at 3-3 they required to take 1 ½ points from the last two games to successfully defend the trophy. Unfortunately for them the Moray top two players took what Forres were looking for to record a 4 ½-3½ win . The destiny of the League was now back in the hands of both Elgin and Hopeman!
Hopeman secured the points when Stuart Reid halved his match against Wayne Myron. Doug Stewart of Elgin brought the Hardhillock side closer with a good win to leave it resting on the final match. Andrew Christison then won on the 18th green to increase the Hopeman victory margin to 5 ½-2½. Level on points with six each, both clubs had also taken 22 ½ individual match points to leave the League in a historic tie.
Although not affecting the title Nairn got the better of their near neighbours, Nairn Dunbar by 5-3 with the scoreline not reflecting the closeness of the match as four games finished all square.
